What does "indie music" mean to you?

Are we describing the type of music, or the way the music is created/distributed, or both?

Don't all bands initially start out as an "indie band?"

Discuss.

Wouldn't you say that all bands start out as indie bands, then?

It technically means both now, I guess.
Indie has formed it's way into a genre (independent from 'normal' genres, I suppose)
but to me, it makes more sense to look at is as the way it's distributed. (Indie label - not a major label, or Indie - produced, funded, etc, by yourself).

Knowing this is AP, someone is going to shit all over what I've had to say, so I can't WAIT!
So indie is another way to say "alternative?"

Alternative was already such an all encompassing term for those miscellaneous bands, why do we need another one, ha.

Indie is the new alternative. Don't know exactly what to call it? Call it indie.
So the terms are interchangeable?

Bloc Party-Silent Alarm
Listen to that album; it should provide some insight.
In what way? Lyrically or musically? Or like, production-wise?

It does sort of seem like indie is just a new way to describe what used to be "alternative." I guess after people started using that to describe bands like nickelback, chevelle, three days grace, etc, people needed a term to describe something that was still alternative but at the same time the exact opposite of those bands.
So you could say that indie is an alternative to alternative?

Or I guess it could also be a sub-genre of alternative, but with no definitive characteristics.
