There's no story, really. I just think this site's users in general are really hypocritcal when it comes to things like "selling out." Gabe starts a new band looking for mainstream appeal, has some success, and suddenly he's a pariah, the butt of every joke, etc. fun. does the same thing, appears on Glee, sells their songs to every corporation that can write them a check, does collabroations with Pink, etc, and they're lauded as heroes. Next year at this time somebody will bump this thread and Nate Ruess' $3-5 million net worth will be received with "dude deserves it." Why not Gabe?

I'm not even saying this as a fan of either band - I just don't get why one guy trying to be rich and famous is okay with everybody, but the other isn't.

^Could be. But didn't a bunch of articles come out that said they wrote Some Nights with the intention of "taking over the world?" Initially maybe fun. was created with more noble purposes but the newest record was written to be on the radio.

Again - not saying there's anything wrong with that - people like it, that's all that matters.

Is "Good Girls Go Bad" really any more or less subtle than "We Are Young"?

Subjective, but a fair point. I think a lot of people would say the same about fun if it wasn't for their background, though.

Yeah I hear you. The songwriting for fun. is better, I'm not disputing that. My point is more so that if The Format had never been around, fun. would have been dismissed as just another radio-pop band. They'd get no coverage on this website (aside from people bashing them along with everything else on the radio). This community's knee jerk reaction to hearing "We Are Young" (if it was a new, unknown band) on the radio would be to dislike it.

But yeah at the end of the day it's silly. I'm happy for Gabe, happy for Nate.
