Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Randy Rhodes, Gram Parsons and Brian Jones were all doing their best, most revolutionary work when they died. Has to be one of those. Who knows where they could have taken their respective genres with more time.

It really depends on what you mean by the music industry, doesn't it? I'd definitely have to say Buddy Holly, but I think Whitney Houston's death also had a very profound impact on a lot of people and I'm surprised no one has mentioned her yet.
