increase the retirement age to 70 (grandfather in all current retirees between 65 and 69 obviously) make the benefits pay out less if depending on how much you pay in (indicating that you made more money during your life time and have more savings, though obviously there needs to be a better system than just a sliding scale) and give nothing to anyone who made in excess of 1 mil a year average for the time they worked.

^^^I support the means testing for SS if we were trying to fix the current system, for sure. It was maybe the one thing I agreed with Romney/Ryan on during the campaign. Though I admit it took me a while to come around on that, mostly because I have a hard time denying people their money after they paid into it their whole lives. But it's becoming necessary in order to keep the program alive as is for the people who actually need it.

I used to support the increased age thing, but I've read too much in the last few months about how doing so hurts middle and lower class retirees more, so I kind of backed off of that.

First off, I'd like to state that if the government had looked at financial reform with the same rigour as social security, then we'd probably have seen some arrests, regulations and so on. So, my opinion on the issue is, we actually need to increase spending on social security. Given the current economic climate, there needs to be more assistance to help people survive and endure this harsh crisis. In terms of cost, we need to look at our tax rate, the spending on the maintenance of the American empire, welfare for corporate entities, etc.
