This was a remarkable read. I thought this community might find it interesting.

I don't doubt that he's a nice enough man, just as I don't doubt that Hitler had plenty of friends in his personal life, many of whom probably disagreed with the Holocaust. It doesn't matter, the question is not of his personality but of his character. He can say all the nice things he wants and be as friendly as he wants, as long as he continues to fund groups denying the LGBT community their rights I have a problem with him.

You're being an idiot. Leave now.

The point still remains, his friendship with a single gay person does not change the fact that he is funding groups seeking to deny Homosexuals the right to marry their partners. He is still an asshole. Seriously, get fucked.

I'm honestly beginning to wonder if you actually read the article. How is it about Dan Cathy being friends with a gay person. The article is written by a gay man who previously organized and led the charge on a huge Chick-fil-a boycott. He probably has more of a right to be mad at Chick-fil-a than most of us, and he finds Dan Cathy to a) be a man of conscience, b) a man who is not closed minded, and c) a man who is willing to change policies for the well-being of others.

I'm not sure what you're reading out of the article, but you're not getting the point.

Christians have historically opposed gay marriage. Their Holy Book tells them that they will be persecuted for what they believe but that they should hold firm. Christians are being persecuted, but are holding firm to what they believe. I don't understand why people find this to be so unbelievable.

Agreed. How long has it been since homosexuality really started being something our culture began to accept as a whole? It hasn't been that long (Obama just recently changed his stance on this issue - no one was crucifying him about it). I think it's totally unreasonable that people are expecting that Christians should immediately drop a value that they have historically held because culture tells them to. They are told in the Bible that they will be persecuted for their beliefs and that culture will disagree with them, but that they should hold firm.

People are just being unreasonable.

The Bible tells you to do a lot of stupid shit. That doesn't stop Christians from wearing two differnt kinds of fabric, does it? And shouldn't there be a hierarchy of beliefs that people should believe in... with 'love thy neighbor' somewhere near the top?

You're proving that you don't understand anything about the Bible. Anyone who has even basic knowledge would know that the fabric/shellfish argument doesn't hold water. And I do believe that their should be a hierarchy of beliefs:

1) Love God
2) Love others
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/...40&version=NIV

From that article, I see Dan Cathy committed to loving his neighbors (the gay community) in a way that still honors God above all else. They stopped funding the most divisive groups; they redrafted their vision statement to add treating all people, including LGBT, with honor, dignity, and respect; He personally reached out to one of his most stringent dissenters and asked what he could do to change and then did it.

As a Bible believing Christian, Dan Cathy will probably never ideologically change the way he thinks about homosexuality. In his mind, that would be putting "love your neighbor" over "love God." But he is doing all he can to love his neighbor while loving God first and someone with much more reason to be pissed at him than you is okay with it.

Here is a solid article about this.

tl;dr version:

The Shellfish and polyester laws are both ceremonial, or cleanliness, laws. The Jews had to follow these in order to be clean before God.
Abstaining from homosexuality is not only part of the cleanliness law, but part of the moral law. The ceremonial law no longer applies. The moral law always does.

How do we know this? Simple hermeneutics. In the New Testament, we see that the ceremonial law is fulfilled in Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. That means that Christians no longer have to follow it in order to be clean before God; Jesus makes them clean. We also see that neither shellfish or polyester are ever condemned in the NT. In fact, Jesus explicitly states that all foods are clean.

What we do see is homosexuality reaffirmed as sin in the NT, many times, actually. So, the shellfish and polyester argument truly does hold no water, and only goes to show that someone has the capability to a) do a quick (and lazy) google search and/or b) use an argument that they heard from someone else but actually know nothing about.

Dude promotes and profits off the torture and slaughter of billions of birds yearly and people got mad that he publicly disapproved of two dudes/chicks getting a marriage license together.

Yeah! What about the birds?
