When Bertie and Jay were coming up with a name they found that 'Shouting Signals' showed the bands mentality, that we are fresh on the scene: ready to shout out and show the world what we can do. Shouting Signals is also one of a kind. We searched the net through endless accounts and there is no other group before us that has had the name Shouting Signals - it is an original.
2. How did this band get started?
Shouting Signals really started to gel as a unit when we entered the Outhouse Studios in February 2012 to record the first two tracks (The Penitence, One Forty) for our debut release. Having spent real time together in the close quarters of the recording studio and hotel rooms, we started gelling. And then it would be the three-times-a-week rehearsals and frame of mind for gigging that got us working as a cohesive unit rather than five individuals.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
We take our influences from a number of different bands and styles. Each member brings something different to the table with some of the main influences being; Paramore, Architects, You Me At Six, 30 Seconds to Mars, Deaf Havana, Alexisonfire and many more
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Anyone who inspires us to push harder and become better, at the moment it would be bands like Paramore, You Me At Six, Underoath, Killswitch Engage, Sleeping With Sirens, Memphis May Fire and Architects.
5. Best food to eat on tour?
Anything that you shouldn't eat on a day to day basis! Our singer is hooked on Tesco noodles and I think we’re fiends for Subway and Greggs!
6. Why should people listen to your band?
Because we pour everything that we have into our music and genuinely feel that we have something new to bring to the scene. Our music is well thought out and designed to grab peoples attention, plus it’s a lot of fun to play live!
7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
With absolutely no thought needed it'll have to be Usain Bolt. Main reason is he's epic and knows it, plus everyone wants to be the fastest man in the world!
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
I think it’ll be a time for some corny words and tears. So we would have to say our fans, greasy food, energy drinks and our very dear friend who has been there supporting us from the start Mr. Jack Daniels.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
More opportunities for unsigned bands that are usually better than most signed bands. The government should stop spending money on rubbish and pay unsigned bands for good recordings and fancy gear!
10. Memorable tour experience?
To be honest there are a few:
Jay turning up to a gig at the London Relentless Garage with one drumstick!
Jay starting a fight before a gig!
Jay getting caught short in the car on the way to a gig….
Jay mostly being naked.
Jay in general.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
It’s an awesome source for info on upcoming and already established bands. If you need to know what’s going on, you need to touch base with AP.
12. What is your favourite song to play?
To be honest it’s hard to pick one in particular but the Whitney Houston cover always goes down a treat! Along with The Penitence which we launched as our first single and shot the video for down on London’s Docklands! (Video Link)
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Mixed really, Bertie loves a good cruise and Scott only goes where it’s cold and snowy. Rikk likes going Stateside, but especially Vegas. Jay likes to go Down Under where there’s a good bush and Tom loves a bit of Eastern Europe; Hostel style.
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Looking around the room for examples we would have to say Busted, Sum 41, Spice Girls, Blink 182, and Michael Jackson… Oh and Rikk says Iron Maiden, Motley Crue and Kiss. He really is the black sheep of this band!
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
The ability to actually care about anything. Gotta be mean to be nice!
16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
Locating Jay, Rikk jogging on the spot, Bertie searching for a plug to steam his voice, Tom slamming down some donuts and monster and Scott frantically tuning up.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
We all met on the internet and highly approve of people meeting strangers online.
18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
To be honest it’s all a bit boring and repetitive, but we feel that our songs are designed for everyone’s ears and will gently caress the airwaves in ways that they have never been caressed before.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
We spend most of our time either talking about doing things with no intention on actually doing them and becoming regulars in Southends coffee establishments.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Bertie can do flips, Jay can do wheelspins, Rikk's good at keeping people alive, Tom draws pictures and Scott likes wind farms.
