Same here. American Psycho made me physically sick reading, but it was terrific.
finishing american psycho drained me. book was tuff.

check out anything by John Steinbeck though or The Road by Cormac Mcarthy (pretty fucking intense throughout). if you like CP, then obviously read fight club.. that shit was bonkers.

anything by Murakami is what I've been enjoying a lot lately...
I suggest Norwegian Wood or The Wind Up Bird Chronicles .... both are riveting.

Jonathan Franzen, David Mitchell, Don Delillo, Paul Auster

I also dug Delillo's White Noise.

Well if you want your life to change...

Also, if you are a Palahniuk (I know I spelled that wrong) fan, have you read Haunted? Having read almost all of his books, it is by far his best.

I still haven't checked this book out. It's been on my to read list for years.

I LOVE Haunted, though Invisible Monsters is still my favorite by a small margin

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is my favorite novel of all time, and I highly recommend it.

The Shipping News by Annie Proulx is sad and bleak, but also great.

If you want your mind to hurt in the best possible way check out anything by Gene Wolfe. Specifically The Book of the New Sun

I'm reading the Tenth of December by George Saunders right now and it's great, has potential to be in my top 10 favorite books of all time.

Also, I recommend Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon, or The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak..

I love the House of Leaves and Palahniuk recommendations too, you can't go wrong there

For contemporary fiction, the new JK Rowling is very good. Jonathan Safran Foer and Cormac McCarthy are other favorites of mine. I've also heard good things about Murakami, but I'm stuck in a British Novel Seminar this semester, so it's been impossible for me to catch up on more recent stuff.

I'm personally interested in anything during the Great Depression and the Cold War eras, so I'd recommend Steinbeck, Vonnegut, and Hemingway for classics.

Also, Alexander Solzhenitsyn for Russian Lit. Dude's a genius.

You can't go wrong with Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, or Winter of Our Discontent by Steinbeck. Also, if you're into more historical/theoretical stuff, I've been told Dancing in the Dark by Dickstein is a good overview of arts in that period.

William Faulkner is generally considered one of the best authors of that period, especially in the South. As I Lay Dying is good, and The Sound and the Fury is a trip.
