The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is trying to put together a Spotify-esque subscription music service.
Google Inc.'s Android unit has been negotiating with music companies to start a paid subscription music-streaming service akin to Spotify AB, according to people familiar with the matter. Separately, Google's YouTube video website is trying to obtain licenses from music labels to start a paid subscription service for music videos and potentially also for audio-only songs, these people said.
I have no idea why I'm responding to this, but even the notion of everything Google has done other than the search engine being a fail is literally one of the funniest things I've ever read on the internet. Good job.
Anyway, good move from Google. YouTube going for a subscription is the next logical step, it'll still be the same for the normal user, but with the option there for subscription. Streaming service could be good, Play Music is decent atm, they have the infrastructure there for a very good streaming service. Spotify and Rdio better start looking over their shoulders anyway
