I'm starting a band, and originally I was going to be the main vocalist and lyricist, which is what I've wanted to do since I can remember, but my bandmate discovered that his friend (who goes to our school) has an amazing voice and thinks he would be a great fit for our band. At first I was defensive and didn't like the idea of someone else singing my lyrics, but then I thought about Pete Wentz who writes Fall Out Boy's lyrics and that got me thinking about how others feel.

If you write lyrics, how do you feel about someone else singing them? Do you think lyricists who don't sing get enough credit in the scene?

If its been your dream to sing, then would you really be happy otherwise? Now, if you downright suck, practice on your own time to better your voice. But, there have been plenty of mediocre singers who made a large impact and are some of the most beloved bands.

So thats my take, is to consider your happiness. If your friends abandon you for this, fine. Nothing wrong with two bands surfacing from this situation, right? After all, you shouldn't disappoint the kid in you.

BUT if you really dont give a hoot about singing, then yeah let the sucker sing. I'm all about backing my brother since his voice blows others out of the water, and I want in on that fame. After we get big then I'll consider fronting my own band. So you could look at it that way too.

As for lyrics, I would not feel comfortable with someone singing my lyrics. However, my brother writes exceptionally well on his own, so it worked out for me. I cant imagine dealing with a singer who has nothing to contribute lyrically. So I cant give you advice on the lyrics dilemma, but I hope my above insight helps you some!

Personally, I probably wouldn't do it. I'd let the other singer write his own lyrics and keep mine for something else I'd do on the side.

However, I'd love to hear someone do their own take on covering a Hailey or AFF song. That'd be great.

I think it depends on a) how badly you want to sing and/or b) how badly you want to sing these particular lyrics. The great thing about being a musician is that you can have as many projects going as you have the energy for. You do make a good point about FOB, so consider that, but also consider what you can do to satisfy your vocal jones.

By the same token, there's a chance that the other singer isn't interested in singing someone else's words.

We've kinda discussed it. I think we're going to co-write the lyrics, similar to TBS or something. My own songs I will save for a side project.

Sounds like the best outcome. Do some sweet dual vocals please.

Good on ya. I've never once collaborated on lyrics with someone and had them come out well. But I do know friends in bands where it's worked. All depends on the chemistry of the two writers.

I was in a band and wrote lyrics, but I know I don't have a good voice, so I didn't do vocals. I wanted my words to be heard, but wasn't going to cut off my nose to spite my face.
