Sony Music are suing a Swedish BitTorrent user for $233,000 after he leaked Beyonce's latest album, 4, on The Pirate Bay. According to TorrentFreak, the 47 year old man from Gothenburg, who worked in the music industry, shared the album on June 8, 2011, ahead of its June 24 release date. Opinions?
A better question is, when an album leaks, why not put it up immediately for via legitimate means so that fans who want to support the artist can have it as well as the people who download it illegally (I'm looking at you Thrice).
Oh, and before anyone goes "But they have agreements with retailers!" it's 2013, time to adjust to the digital marketplace.
It's not like I've never enjoyed a leak before, but even I can see that putting the art out illegally before anyone is even getting an option to buy it is a huge pain on album sales. And we've seen several times, with less successful artists, that loss can have a huge impact.
