The Countdown: Five Cool Things About Music

Posted by - 12:07 PM on 03/11/13
For today's "countdown" feature, I thought that we could maybe get a good discussion going about our favorite hidden gems in music. I posted a list of some of my favorites a while back in my blog, but I never shared them here. Here are 5 things I find cool about music. What are some of yours?
The Countdown1) The last line from The Format's Interventions & Lullabies is "we all fall down" and the first line to Dog Problems is "ashes to ashes."

2) Brand New’s "Limousine" is about … this. I doubt it’s possible to watch that video and not cry. Also, that there’s a Track 0 on TDAGARIM.

3) In The Gaslight Anthem's "Meet Me By The River’s Edge" the lyric, "No surrender, my Bobby Jean" are two songs, in sequence, from Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA.

4) The end of Set Your Goals "To Be Continued" references a plethora of Something Corporate songs, a band who also references Jimmy Eat World and New Found Glory in their songs.

5) Basically everything about the references in Jimmy Eat World's "A Praise Chorus," where after the second stanza, seven songs become the "praise chorus" of the title. The first is sung continuously in the background; the other six are sung over this background-vocal track.

Oh wow, never knew that existed. Pretty neat!

Also never picked up on the Something Corporate references in To Be Continued, that's so cool.

Never realized that with the SYG song.

And I absolutely love the Praise Chorus for that bridge.

EDIT: In recent times I was drawn into the new Silverstein album for its concept; they did such a good job of working it out and the music was top-tier as well.

Obligatory "The first star you see may not be a star" from SoCo's Konstantine reference.

Oh and A Praise Chorus has always been one of my favorite Jimmy Eat World songs because of that part.

www.rapgenius.com

website that breaks down all the references and second/triple meanings in rap songs. They do some more high-profile songs of other genres, but their coverage of hip hop is pretty impressive and comprehensive.

I've been seeing them push for that, but I mean its still a while away. Lot of music out there.

Did see they have all the new Bowie lyrics explained on Stereo IQ.
