A Cursive Memory - Changes
Record Label: Vagrant Records
Release Date: February 19, 2008
A Cursive Memory have already found their way onto TRL with their first major record label release. The Californian quartet exploded into the scene with catchy tunes that reminisce of Hellogoodbye’s rise to fame. Infectious keyboard and a pair of soft vocals lead this pop rock driven band.

The opening track “South” will tell you right away if you want to keep listening to the album or not. It is an upbeat song, with a catchy keyboard that carries the song as well as the rest of the album. The opening lyrics, “Every step that I want to take, I’m told to hurry up and wait,” give you a fresh feeling and a hope for more verses to get caught in your head.

The album tries to catch the listener with the first three tracks, but suddenly drops off from what A Cursive Memory do best. In certain tracks it seems they try too hard to slow down and change their sound with whiny vocals and predictable lyrics. It seemed that two or three of the tracks did not belong on the album.

However, songs like “A Different Kind of Love” show that they can slow down their music and still be catchy at the same time. Some lyrics are simple but effective with lines like, “You’ve got me lost inside your eyes with no way out.” For the most part, however, the lyrics seem bland and the guitars unnoticeable.

Changes is a good album and should be listened to. A Cursive Memory have potential and should be able to show it after a little more experience, especially if they’re going to be on TRL.

Good review. I completley agree with you that the slower songs aren't really good. I enjoy the first 4 0r 5 songs alot and then it just gets boring. I will give the whole album another spin.

The fourth paragraph is incoherent, the switch from "it seems" to "it seemed" in the third is not good, you never really explained the "pair of soft voices" in the introduction, the multiple TRL references were sort of weird, and I question whether the use of "reminisce" in the first paragraph is legitimate (and even if it is, "reminiscent of" would have been better). But I think the main problem with this review is that it doesn't tell readers very much. Your points could be compressed into about a paragraph. You only mentioned two songs by name, and only even referred to a vague "two or three" more, lyrics aside. All you said about the music was that it sounds sort of like Hellogoodbye and that it's keyboard-driven "pop-rock," which barely even means anything anymore.

Couple some awkward phrases with a dry writing style that doesn't really tell a reader much, and the review falls flat.

In all honesty the album barely scratches the surface of what A Cursive Memory is. If you've ever been to one of their shows, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. The album is watered down and many of the songs, Bank, Lions, All The Weak, and A Different Kind Of Love sound much softer and more electronic.

Technicalities aside, if you ever get the chance to see them live, you'll be blown away. In my opinion, there "slower" songs (Lions, All The Weak) are much better than the catchy and more pop songs like Everything and Perfect Company.

You can say whatever you want about the album, just realize that judging them by it would be an understatement.
