The Departed - 07.23.13

Interviewed by
The Departed - 07.23.13The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

The Departed
https://www.facebook.com/thedepartedgyhc

1. How did you get your band name?
We shamelessly stole it from the excellent Martin Scorcese film of the same name!

2. How did this band get started?
Originally, 5 friends in Grimsby came together after the breakups of various other local bands and decided to start writing music that they wanted to play, not whatever the current trend was. Over the years, the line up has changed significantly (both geographically and personally), and the influences/style has also changed, but the ethics and reasons behind the band remain the same.

3. What bands are you influenced by?
Verse, Champion, Comeback Kid, Casey Jones, Stick To Your Guns, plus a ton of Fat Wreck/Epitaph punk bands over the years!

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Comeback Kid and Pay No Respect, for definite! CBK have been a major influence on every single member of this band to date, and are simply one of the best and hardest-working bands in hardcore today. We met Pay No Respect while we were touring Europe back in summer 2011, when we got on a Terror show in Gleisdorf, Austria. PNR were the main support for the Terror tour, and we hit it off with them straight away. We've been firm friends since, and touring with them properly would be a great honour!

5. Best food to eat on tour?
To be honest, most of us aren't fussy... We're just happy that people are kind enough to feed us! We will eat whatever is put in front of us! Two of the band are notoriously picky, however, and you will find Phil Pollard (guitar) and Joey Dean (vox) eating pizza after pizza while the rest of us feast on awesome vegan stuff!

6. Why should people listen to your band?
People can listen to us if they want, we're not here to push ourselves onto anyone. Our music often carries a strong message, be it positive or negative, and if people want to listen to music that means something, then they could do worse than check us out.

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?

Probably Usain Bolt. Just something cool about being the fastest man on the planet, y'know...

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Ourselves, probably. We've put everything we have into this band, and we've never relied on anyone else to get anywhere or do anything.

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Probably make it so that it was less about who you know, and more about whether you were actually any good or not. So many great bands/artists get overlooked in favour of those who know someone who knows someone who can pull some strings, etc, etc.

10. Memorable tour experience?
On our last tour, we were fortunate enough to be able to visit Auschwitz. That was an experience none of us will ever forget. Apart from that, on the same tour, Pollard (guitar) got so drunk in Bruges that he went missing all night, and had the Belgian police trawling canals for him. We all thought he was dead! Turns out he just slept in a doorway about 3 miles away haha!

11. What does AP.net mean to you?
AbsolutePunk.net is a great place for consolidating all types of information relating to bands that each of us is interested in. It's great to see this sort of thing going strong, especially online, where it's available to everyone, everywhere!

12. What is your favorite song to play?
I can't speak for the rest of the band, but for me (Dave H) personally, it's probably "Faithless", which is the first track of our latest album, Steal The Crown.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Again, personally for me, it would be Japan. Always wanted to visit, since I was a kid.

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?

Pink Floyd. My dad was always playing them around the house. Also, stuff like Queen, Free, The Beatles, etc.

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?

Easy. Time travel. Could have some real fun with that one! I would be the ultimate prankster haha!

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
Probably listen to "Hammer The Nails" by Casey Jones on the way to a show... Everyone in the band loves that song, and it gets everyone pumped for performing. None of us are straight edge or anything, but we just love fast, energetic hardcore!

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
Once upon a time, we almost had Paris (Martyr Defiled) join us on vocals, after the departure of our original vocalist, Rob.

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
To be honest, radio isn't ever something we've really paid any close attention to. We're aware of the existence of alt-friendly shows like Daniel P Carter and Mike Davies Punk Rock Show on BBC Radio 1, but we've never had any exposure to them. Maybe it could do us some good to get some actual airplay, but, like a lot of bands these days, the majority of people discover us via the internet.

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Jack (drums) and Pollard (guitar) like to play darts, and are keen players of FIFA on Xbox. Joey (vox) is a karaoke enthusiast and footballer. Hurwood (bass) is a cognitive therapist in his day job, and Dave H (guitar) has an obsession with Japanese sports cars and video games.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?

Pollard (guitar) is really good at Pen Behind The Ear (just google it if you're wondering what it is... haha)!
