Film adaptation of the novel by Markus Zusak coming out November 15th. Directed by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey) with a screenplay by Michael Petroni.

Apparently Fox has some faith in it because they moved the release date up from winter 2014 to November. I can only hope it's decent because I love the book. The girl playing Liesel is a relative newcomer.

Cast:

Sophie Nelisse
Geoffrey Rush
Emily Watson
Ben Schnetzer
Nico Liersch

Quote:
While subjected to the horrors of WWII Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. Under the stairs in her home, a Jewish refuge is being sheltered by her adoptive parents.

Biggest hiccup I see so far is that there's no mention of "Death" as a character. Difficult to translate I suppose, but I hope he's in there.

Edit: Confirmed by Zusak that Death will in fact narrate the film.

Quote:
FIRST BOOK THIEF TRAILER: the Girl, the books & the voice of Death.

And so it is – just on eight years after The Book Thief was first published, here are Liesel, Hans and Rosa, Max and Rudy in the first official trailer for the film, and I can’t lie – I’m writing this with my heart still loud inside me. As I said to a few people close by after watching it: “I’m fine! I’ve just got something in my eye!”

It looks absolutely stunning, and it’s very hard to hold the emotion at bay.

Sophie, Geoffrey, Emily, Ben and Nico all look magnificent…and I will just say to all the loyal readers out there who might be wondering if Death narrates the actual film, as he does in the book:

The answer is an emphatic
YES.

Whilst I’m able to tell you that detail, I can’t say anything else just yet – except that I’m looking forward to seeing how Death enters the screen, and to hearing him speak. Whatever happens, I can leave you now with two small but certain facts:

Just as he does in the book, Death will help look after us.
And he’ll do his very best.

Edit 2: Death is played by Roger Allam!

The book is beautiful, but I'm interested to see how it will translate to film. Having death as a narrator could be pretty hard to do it convincingly. I'm worried they'll drop him/her entirely and just have the story of Liesel play out without a narrator, which would be a massive shame.

It appears there is no 'death' in this film. That cheesy as fuck voice over near the end of the trailer made me cringe, "Hope will define her". Hmmmm.

Book talk.

I really hope that everybody still dies at the end of this film. After seeing that trailer, it doesn't look good anyway, but it'd fucking kill me if it had some awful cop out of a Hollywood ending where Max escapes the Nazi's and Liesel and Rudy live happily ever after or some shit. Will have to wait and see.
