Beretta Suicide - 09.17.13

Interviewed by: Zac Djamoos (09/24/13)
The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

1. How did you get your band name?
The name ‘Beretta Suicide’ really came from nothing – I was just writing words down that I thought sounded cool and trying to match them together. Originally I wanted to be called ‘Shotgun Suicide’ but it sounded a bit too brutal for what we do – Beretta has a classier vibe to it. I guess that kinda sums up what we want to do: catchy song writing mixed with aggressive punk rock…

2. How did this band get started?
When I first moved up to Leeds I wanted to start a band. I didn’t know anyone so I put an ad out online looking for dirty, misdirected troublemakers that love low slung guitars, punk rock 'n' roll and having a good time. After a few line-up changes we have settled on 3 lifers. We really can’t do anything else and we really don’t want to!

3. What bands are you influenced by?
Individually we have various influences ranging from hardcore to metal to dance to hip hop, but as a band I think we draw on influences from Wildhearts, Rancid, Sex Pistols, Guns n Roses, Motorhead, Ramones, AC/DC, the Clash, the Bronx and Cancer Bats…

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
The Wildhearts would be amazing because of how much they mean to us (especially Joey – singer/bass). I would love to tour with Rancid. They are one of my all time favourite bands and it would blow my mind to share a stage with them! Cancer Bats would be pretty damn cool too – they are so good live!

5. Best food to eat on tour?
Whatever is free!

6. Why should people listen to your band?
There is too much posing these days. People don’t mean what they do or say anymore. Rock n roll has lost its edge, its danger. We want to bring it back. We want music to mean something again. Personally, I would love it if our band could mean as much to someone as certain bands mean to me. If you’re tired of scenesters peddling their generic shit and are looking for something a bit different played by people that believe in Rock n Roll check us out! If you like it: awesome. If not: whatever. At least you gave us a go!

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
I’d like to be a pro footballer and get paid a shit ton of money.

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
I’d thank my mum and dad for bumping uglies. I’d thank anyone that ever helped us and anyone that ever gave a shit about us. If we had any fans I’d thank them too!

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
I’d put more people in charge that actually love music, that understand what it’s like to be in a band, what it means to the people involved and also what it means to people that are into music. Too many people that control things don’t seem to give a shit about artists or musicians and are just interested in making quick money. These days especially it seems that the actual music doesn’t matter as much as how many units will shift next week. Shows like X Factor, Pop Idol, The Voice, and Britain’s Got Talent are teaching the next generation that the goal is to be ‘famous’ – and do it any way you can and that talent really does mean fuck-all. Do you think people like Bob Dylan or Kurt Cobain would win Pop Idol? Dave Grohl really summed it up best for me: “When I think about kids watching a TV show like American Idol or The Voice, then they think, ‘Oh, OK, that’s how you become a musician, you stand in line for eight fucking hours with 800 people at a convention center and… then you sing your heart out for someone and then they tell you it’s not fuckin’ good enough.’ Can you imagine? It’s destroying the next generation of musicians! …Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy and old fucking drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll fucking start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they’ll become Nirvana. Because that’s exactly what happened with Nirvana. Just a bunch of guys that had some shitty old instruments and they got together and started playing some noisy-ass shit, and they became the biggest band in the world. That can happen again! You don’t need a fucking computer or the internet or The Voice or American Idol.”

10. Memorable tour experience?
We toured Europe with the Misfits a little while back which was incredible! We grew up listening to the Misfits and I had a massive poster of the Crimson Skull over my bed. Jerry and the guys were so cool to us and looked after us really well. I’ll never forget it! The first time we met them they treated us like long lost friends and made us feel so welcome and so comfortable. If I could go back to a 13 year old me and tell him that one day we’d be working out with Jerry only every day for weeks and watching the Misfits every night side stage I would lose my mind!

11. What does AP.net mean to you?
It seems to be one of the last few places that has no agenda and no bullshit. It’s a place that people can come and give their opinion and share ideas without other people being dicks (unless they’re being a dick in the first place). It’s a cool site that’s always got something worth checking out on and loads of really cool bands that we might not have heard of if it wasn’t for AP!

12. What is your favorite song to play?
Personally I like playing ‘Wolf in the Wings’ because it means I can get a bit of a breather! People seem to really dig that song too.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
I’d rather be on tour than be on vacation. But one of my favourite places to tour is Spain. The people are cool, the weather is great and the beaches are nice too! I went to New York once and that was amazing – I’d love to tour the US soon! Maybe next year…

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Nu metal! KoRn, Limp Bizkit and Hed(PE). Also skateboarding (trying to anyways), listening to Slipknot, AFI, Offspring and Rancid…

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
I’d like the ability to convince anyone of anything I wanted – does that count? If not, I’d like to turn invisible. For… research reasons…

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
Nah – warm up, few beers. Let’s just get on and do it!

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
I am a massive football (soccer) fan. I support Arsenal and get really stroppy when they lose. I’m stroppy a lot – but this is our season!

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
English radio and American radio are different. There’s way more stations in the US playing a variety of stuff. In England it is chart music. All day. Every day. It sucks. There are a few underground stations that are pretty cool but the majority of the time it’s shit. Could we flourish on the radio? I have no idea to be honest…

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Kick back with my boys, play music. Check out new bands. Watch films. Play football. Party like the world is ending!

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
I’m really good at being naked.
