The Reptilian - Low Health

Reviewed by: Zac Djamoos (10/02/13)
The Reptilian Low Health
Record Label: Count Your Lucky Stars
Release Date: June 26, 2013

The Reptilian pretty much epitomize the twinkle daddy genre. Between noodley, almost mathy guitars, lyrics about friends, and guttural yelling, they are the perfect band for the modern twinkle lover. Their latest full-length, Low Health is proof of that, at almost a half hour of twinkly goodness.

It’s fair to say that they probably draw much influence from 90s emo legends Braid, albeit slightly heavier. I was slightly jarred at the beginning of opener “Pan (Sucks),” as it’s an incredibly shouty song. It begins softly enough, then just erupts. It shows off both The Reptilian’s vocalists, as well as their knack for creating fun, twinkly melodies; by the time this song is over you’ll have a pretty good idea of whether or not Low Health is for you. “University of the Indian in the Cupboard” follows suit, the yelling even gruffer on this song and the drumming even more frantic. “Sam Haircut” provides the first real deviation from the preceding tracks, being somewhat slower and featuring a longer, drumroll-laden intro and a cleanly sung verse two minutes in. The song also contains some of the record’s more memorable lyrics: “Clean yourself off and sink in the ocean/ what a great way to take a vacation.”

Side B is where the mathiness really begins to show (if it hadn’t already). There’re “Kief Puck” and “DK Mode,” which sound like they could’ve been cut form the new Native record, and the short and fast “The Paseo” almost sounds like TTNG. The closing duo are probably the best on the record; “Cooler by the Lake” features tradeoff vocals and an extremely ADTR-like but ridiculously fun chant of “What’s between us is thicker than blood” and “Underwater Kiss Makeup” is a nearly five minute culmination of everything else presented on the record. The song ends with a minute left, and the listener is left with only random talking voices.

The Reptilian’s Low Health is a record that all twinkle junkies need to hear. It leans on the aggressive side of that spectrum enough to differentiate itself. It’s got enough math technicality to keep you interested. If there’s an issue with the album, it’s the often guttural sounding vocals. They may take getting used to, but when they do it’ll become a staple in your twinkle collection.

7/10

Oh, really?

Yeah, I know. I'm sorry but I couldn't think of another name for the genre.

You use "twinkle/twinkly" three times in your opening paragraph alone. At that point, you should rewrite it so it reads a lot more smoothly. Or invest in a thesaurus. If it's Count Your Lucky Stars, I tend to use "Emo/Indie revival" as a blanket term. Hell, CYLS are a scene all on their own anyway.

If I may say so, you spend a lot of time describing what the album sounds like but not enough time discussing the records pros/cons. 7/10 is clearly a solid, perhaps average, score, so what makes this record decent, but not a great or a poor album? Aside from saying "This song has this", "This song has that", I don't feel like you're discussing the quality of the record enough.

Thanks. I mean seriously, thank you for the feedback; I was hoping for some criticism like this. I'll definitely keep this in mind.

No problem. If I came off as a bit of a dick, I didn't mean to.

I'm also pretty sure this doesn't really qualify as "twinkly" even... this sounds much more like Native to me than any sort of "twinkle daddy" band.

I firmly believe that the term "twinkle", more than anything, is just a tongue-in-cheek tumblrism. It''s a self-referential joke. You made a few good points here though, referring to the mathy parts and the gruff shouting. Also the part about ATDR. In the future yeah, you should talk more about the record overall, and how this particular album compares to their last one(s). Is it heavier? Is the production better? Why are they better or worse than the slew of bands in their genre? Good job though duder!

Thank you also for the critique, I'll take that to heart!
Twinkle is an awful genre name.

I think the noodley guitar is more similar to bands like Algernon and Dads, for the most part, hence why I called them twinkle. Definitely sound like Native on some songs though.
