Festival Spotlight: 2013 South By So What?! FestivalEstablished in 2008, the South By So What?! Festival has always taken place during the week of South By South West as an alternate option for Dallas, TX, residents to watch 50+ bands for one low price. Specializing in showcasing the up and coming bands in the metal, punk, and electronic scenes, South By So What?! always has an eclectic lineup that'll meet the needs of many music fans. This year's festival, however, is a bit different as it has moved to the end of October. This is also the second straight year the festival has been held at Quiktrip Park in Grand Prairie, TX, as the festival has increased its venue space due to demand. This year's festival should be no different. It's full of classic and new bands that'll excite the AbsolutePunk.net readers attending and will prompt more to attend.
Friday's line-up will showcase both the metal and post-hardcore side of things. The first stage will feature traditional metal and metalcore, as the legendary Gwar headlines that stage that evening. The day will also feature sets from exciting acts like Miss May I, Unearth, and Whitechapel. You best bring your gym shorts this stage - you'll need them in the pit. The second stage feels like it was constructed just for AP.net readers, as it is headlined by Finch, Story Of The Year, Dance Gavin Dance, Hawthorne Heights, and more. Finch and Story Of The Year will be playing its breakthrough albums ( What It Is To Burn and Page Avenue, respectively) in its entirety while Dance Gavin Dance will get weird and bring the energy with a slew of new songs from its latest album, Acceptance Speech. And if you attended this past summer's Warped Tour, Saturday will feel like an extended vacation with Sleeping With Sirens, Memphis May Fire, and The Word Alive headlining. Saturday features more of the newer breed of rock bands in the scene as well as up-and-coming electronic artists. The final day of the festival is also the most youthful one of the three days, as the excitement should be palpable throughout.
Like I said, the 2013 South By So What?! Festival has a little something for everyone and should be a fantastic weekend for all those attending. Tickets are still available and stay tuned throughout the next two weeks on AbsolutePunk.net and our AbsoluteVoices sites for playlists, previews, and ticket giveaways.
