|The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:|
Courage My Love
1. How did you get your band name?
Mercedes: Got it from a creepy 1936 movie called Things to Come. It's a line in the movie. The apocalypse strikes, a mother and father are looking over their sleeping children and the father is trying to comfort the mother. We thought it was a really awesome scene in the movie, as well as a great name for a band!
Phoenix: It's a line from a horror movie made in 1936 called Things To Come. We're really into scary movies and thought it was a good message that we stood behind so it seemed like the right name for us.
2. How did this band get started?
Mercedes: Phoenix and I had been writing songs together since we were little. We started playing shows around 2010. Things just kinda progressed from there!
Phoenix: The band started 3 years ago with 'Cedes and me, we'd been writing together and wanted to get things off the ground. After we lost our old bassist last year, we started jamming with Brandon in October. We'd known Brandon since we were 14 and seen a lot of the bands he used to play in so we thought it would be a good fit.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
Mercedes: It's always changing. I love bands like Brand New, Citizen, Balance and Composure and Chiodos!
Phoenix: We all like different things, I've always been influenced by bands like Jimmy Eat World, Brand New, Deftones, but probably because that's what I listened to growing up. These days I'll listen to pretty much everything.
Brandon: Some of my biggest influences band wise are Chiodos, Die Mannequin, Agraceful, Bring Me the Horizon, Deftones, Every Time I Die - mostly people with passion, determination and a story to tell.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Mercedes: I'd love to tour with any of the bands I just mentioned! Past would have to be Sex Pistols or Billy Idol.
Phoenix: I feel like it would be fun to tour with a band like Refused or some other iconic band like that. We'd probably learn a lot and have our minds blown constantly which is awesome!
Brandon: Honestly I just love touring. Anyone without a negative attitude would do.
5. Best food to eat on tour?
Phoenix: Everyone likes pizza. Even if it's bad, it's still pretty good.
Brandon: Sushi and Pop Tarts.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
Mercedes: We're an honest, hard working band. We write from the heart. We perform with everything we've got. We love all our fans to death!
Phoenix: It's hard to answer without sounding like we're totally arrogant, egotistical assholes, but if I had to pick a reason, probably because we try and be as honest as we possibly can with our music. We want to reach people and use whatever musical skills we have to make a difference in people's lives. We're a band that stands behind our music and wants to help people.
Brandon: Because we're awesome. But a proper answer would be that we give it our all for our fans and our music is appealing to many different tastes.
7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
Mercedes: Probably Beckham so I could be married to Posh Spice.
Phoenix: Is Chuck Norris an athlete?
Brandon: Why would I wanna be an athlete when I'm a musician? No one's taking my place!
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Mercedes: The usual: family, friends, fans, and my amazingly talented band mates!
Phoenix: My parents, my band, and anyone who's ever been nice enough to help us out.
Brandon: I'd thank my wonderful band, our stunning crew who helped us along the way, and my super supportive friends and family who made sure I always knew I was loved by them.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Mercedes: I sometimes wish that the music industry was more about good music and less about catchy hits "that the kids will like". So much of mainstream music these days is fake and insincere. I think it's an insult to the intellect of our generation. We care about more than getting wasted and getting money. We're smarter than mainstream media. We don't need to be talked down to. Music shouldn't be dumbed down just to make money.
Phoenix: Probably the fact that a lot of 9 year old girls have seen Miley swing around naked on a wrecking ball but never seen Joan Jett fully clothed.
Brandon: Everyone should have a breakdown to boost their career.. I feel that a lot of mainstream music has no heart - it's all about the cash flow and it seems to be working since they're making money off these kids spreading the wrong message. You shouldn't do drugs and ride around on people at clubs. Have some respect for yourself.
10. Memorable tour experience?
Mercedes: Our first ever show in Tokyo! We had no idea what to expect, and our minds we're blown. Hearing them chant our names and scream our lyrics changed my life! It's like everything was in slow motion in that moment.
Phoenix: Doing karaoke in the exact same room where they shot that scene from Lost In Translation in Tokyo and chipping 'Cedes' tooth with the mic.
Brandon: Partying with Hedley and Faber Drive in PEI.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
Mercedes: AbsolutePunk? Best online magazine on the planet?
Phoenix: It's a super cool site! I always used to check it out and now it's pretty surreal to be on it!
Brandon: AP.net occupied me at work in my time of need. It means a lot to me.
12. What is your favorite song to play?
Mercedes: I love all of them, but my fave in the set right now would have to be "Skin And Bone." I get super emotional and I feel like the crowd goes through the journey with me.
Phoenix: It's really hard to pick because they all mean so much to me. They're all from different points in our lives so it's kind of tough to pick just one. I guess it changes all the time?
Brandon: "We're Not in Kansas Anymore."
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Phoenix: Literally anywhere with a beach and a good sushi place!
Brandon: Cottage, forest or anywhere with a beach and beer
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Mercedes: David Bowie, Janice Joplin, Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, Nina Hagen.
Phoenix: Bob Marley and Nina Hagen. My mom and dad had those on repeat.
Brandon: My father had me listening to Alice in Chains since I was 2. They give me some nice flashbacks.
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
Mercedes: Teleportation. Touring would be much easier and cheaper, plus you would never get home sick. You could go to any place on earth and back that same day.
Phoenix: The power to teleport.
Brandon: I would want telekinesis because you can really do anything imaginable with that.
16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
Mercedes: I warm up before every show vocally. Lockwood stretches before every show. We all do a football huddle and put our hands in. Let's do this, team!!
Phoenix: We usually football huddle around the drum kit, put our hands in and flip each other off before we play. With love of course.
Brandon: By myself I stretch, have a few drinks, loosen up, wet my hair, then on stage with the band we slap hands and flip each other off.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
Mercedes: I get just as nervous as they do at meet and greets. I'd hate to ever disappoint a fan! They all mean the world to me. My babies!!
Phoenix: I have my brown belt in karate.
Brandon: I'm super organized and stress hard about getting things done.
18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
Mercedes: I wish. Unfortunately female fronted bands, let alone alternative music in general is really hard to get on the radio. I feel like DJs, clubs and radio rock have kind of taken over the radio. Our place is more in the venues, on the road, and online.
Phoenix: I think it's a little hard for bands like us to get a lot of mainstream radio play. We usually have more luck with indie stations or podcasts. I remember the first time I heard one of our songs on the radio though; I was at the gym in the shower and I had to stick my head out and yell "that's me!"
Brandon: I thought our band could flourish from radio but a lot of stations find us "too heavy" our place is more around our fans and touring. Would love more radio play tho. I get a lot of messages when we do get played and those people are very happy to hear us.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Mercedes: I love doing as much as I can for Human Rights organizations with activism. I'm also an avid reader/gamer! Haha.
Phoenix: Friends are definitely a big part of my spare time. I'm pretty much down for anything and they can pretty much talk me into doing anything when we're together.
Brandon: I write songs, poetry, play drums, guitar, practice vocals, hang out with friends, video games with the ol' man, also currently teaching myself French just because.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Mercedes: I'm a unicorn whisperer...
Phoenix: I can make a mean spaghetti!
Brandon: Let's keep this PG, please.
