i think the lyrics on this largely range from forgettable/throwaway to bad/silly. that's my biggest problem with this band- i don't take away any discernible message from their music, save parts of Neon Bible and most of Funeral. The Suburbs deals almost entirely in platitudes, and my early impression of this record is the same even while they make a small stylistic leap. i think some of the songs on the record ("Afterlife", "Normal Person", "Supersymmetry") are great, but for reasons other than any narrative that might be advanced. if you're looking for content in our young century here, look to the Mountain Goats or the National or Kanye or Anais Mitchell or, as others have mentioned, Radiohead.
