Who is it?
A Nashville, TN, group that plays a style of “alternative rock” not unlike that of Brand New or Sainthood Reps, but if those bands worshiped Slint instead of Nirvana. Their sound is more spacious and less abrasive, which makes for a pretty refreshing take on the genre.

How is it?
Pretty much exactly how you might expect. “Father Adder” is a pensive track that ushers you slowly into the EP with soft arpeggios and flowing vocals. The chorus picks up slightly, then it’s back to melancholy. Single “A Moving Swamp” provides deviation in vocals, shifting seamlessly from muttering to yelling a la Balance and Composure. The EP’s best offering comes in the form of closer “Hands in a Hole,” a gradually-building slice of post-Devil and God rock, boasting a repetitive but memorable of “You won’t see me until.” The final minute of the song builds and builds with bashing drums and group vocals before it all implodes into a soft guitar and ambient noises. This single song is the best representation of Nest as a band, and the one I’d recommend to anyone interested in them. Overall, Hadal is a decent listen, albeit a bit of a meandering one, as the songs tend to drag a bit and sound pretty similar. Nonetheless, it’s a bit of a change in a style that’s becoming more and more popular, and that’s always nice to see. Especially when it’s done well.

Love this EP. The instrumentals on "Father Adder" remind me a bit of Death Cab For Cutie, the rest sounds like Sainthood Reps haha. Nice write-up.
