Yeah, I liked tocs a lot, but after DTGL released, I almost immediately forgot about that album. I'll give it a break and say it was a transition record (in between a crapload of member changes, especially with Chamberlain stepping in) and wasn't bad at all for a band that pretty much had to start from scratch all over again. Plus it kinda set up what was to come for DTGL, with songs like
I Don't Feel Very Receptive Today and
Young and Aspiring . Last time I recall though, most of that album was written by Aaron Gillespie and if it weren't for Chamberlain's screaming vocals, it's not quite far off from The Almost's sound. Chamberlain wanted to step in and let his presence known in DTGL. And according to your review, he further enforces that fact. I recall in an interview, that Spencer himself hated TOCS lol.
