I've only seen a couple episodes of this show but I always see the ones with the previous Doctor not the current one. And he was only in the show for like a handful of episodes. I was just a little confused there for a second.

The previous Doctor (the ninth, Christopher Eccleston) was the Doctor for all of Season 1 (the first of the current series).

I just noticed that there's a ton of Doctor Who on Netflix Instant. Is it necessary to see the older stuff before seeing the new series that started in 2005?

Not necessarily. I jumped into the series in 2005 and absolutely loved it. As far as I know, there is no need to see the older stuff in order to enjoy or understand the new stuff.
