First off, thanks a million for doing this interview. Now, what do each of you do in the band ?
I play the guitar solos and sing vocal solos, and Scott Klopfenstein plays
trumpet, guitar and sings harmoniously with me. Matt Wong plays lead bass
solos and Justin Ferreria plays lead drum solos. John Christianson plays
trumpet solos and Danny Reagan plays trombone So Low.
So, it's getting close to the release date for your new album. What can you tell us about this record ?
People are going to lose their fucking minds when they hear this album!
The Reel Big Fish you know and love are back and better than ever! More
horns, more ska, more rock and roll, more furious, angry, hateful, and
sarcastic lyrics and tons of guitar solos!! Haha.
Right on. How does "We're Not Happy Til You're Not Happy" differ from your other albums ?
We have finally captured all that live craziness and frantic, insane energy
from our live show and put it on record! This is the album you've been
waiting for since "Why Do They Rock So Hard"!!
What was the recording process like ? Did it turn out the way you had hoped ?
Recording is always hell! The vision of the song in my head is never what
it sounds like when the band is playing, it is never what it sounds like on
the recording. That's why I hate all my albums so much which is why I get
more pissed off about music all the time, which is why I write songs called
"Don't Start a Band". But, we do the best we can, and I think we've done really
well this time.
If you had to pick a favourite song off of the forthcoming record, what would it be ?
Definitely my number one favorite song on the album is "Revolution"
because I love dub reggae and I love doing cover songs and this is a little
of both! What? I also love the song "A-W-E-S-O-M-E"
because it's so weird and rockin' but live, I love, love, love to play "The
I see that Aaron co-produced "We're Not Happy Til' You're Not Happy" with Shawn Sullivan. Is this the first time your frontman has been a part of the production for your albums ?
I have pretty much co-produced every album we've done, but this is the first time I've gotten any credit!! Haha. I was technically producing this one 100% by myself but Shawn was such a big help and had so much valuable input in everything we did that we couldn't not give him credit for it!
So, you recorded 'Beer' for the third time to put on this disc ? What's different about it from the "Turn The Radio Off" version ?
I'm hoping one day we'll get a good recording of that song...
oh well, maybe next time!
Speaking of "Turn The Radio Off", what's that song like ? Is it sort of like a tribute to your second album ?
Well, I finally wrote the title track for that album, but I guess I'm 9
years too late! Haha, this song is very frantic and fun and crazy!
It says you've selected your cover of Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" as the first single. What can you tell us about that track ?
When I heard that song I knew it would make an amazing reggae song because reggae is...or used to be all about revolution! The lyrics are great and it was fun using the “one drop" beat for the first time in our "ska" bands history. Imagine us calling ourselves ska and never using the "one drop"!!
What other bands are Reel Big Fish listening to these days ?
Hah, myself as well. Does the band have any big plans for the remainder of 2005 ?
Fuck yeah, our new album is coming out so we are going to be busy, busy,
busy touring the world and promoting the album and doing interviews, all
that fun stuff!
Do you have any crazy stories to share with us ? Anything wild happen on the road that you'd care to share with the readers ?
Just the usual drunken debauchery and backstage mayhem. You know: sex,
drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, death, destruction and ska.
Well thanks again for doing this interview. Are there any last words you'd like to throw out there ?
We’re not happy ‘til you’re not happy!
