I've gotten a little bit further, and considering it's name, I was expecting a little more altered reality (something more with what the taxi cab driver says at the beginning and police no longer using 6-shooters) but it's enjoyable.

So far, I'd rather had Aomame transported into a different/parallel universe or something to that effect, like a police state like in 1984... but alas, I can't control that.

I haven't read anything else by Murakami, I hear his early stuff is far better though. What'd you think of 1Q84? Have you read any other books by Murakami, any recommendations?

You should definitely check out Kafka on the Shore. I've currently rewad that one, The Wind-Up BIrd Chronicle, and 1Q84. Kafka on the Shore is phenomenal and so far my favorite work of his.

Damn, this thread makes me want to read a book for fun in the first time in.. God, I don't know how long. Maybe I'll finally read my Hobbit+LOTR box set that I got years ago. Or The Shack.

Anyways, anyone read Misery by Stephen King? Love that book. One of my favorites. The Watchmen was a brilliant graphic novel, as well.

Not sure if I've posted in this thread in the past. Too lazy to check xD.

I'm now over halfway done with the book, and quite frankly, I LOVE IT. Nothing against your opinion of course. My buddy, who recommended me 1Q84, has Kafka on the Shore and is going to lend it to me once I've finished 1Q84. I read 200 some pages of 1Q84 yesterday...

Oh totally thats awesome. Its not even that I dislike 1Q84, I'm just not completely sure how I felt about it. Some of the sequences were brilliant though.

Worst part for me: getting into a chapter so bad that when it ends I entirely don't give a rats ass what Tengo (or Aomame) is doing after reading the last chapter. I think it'd be cool to rearrange the books into just Aomame's plot and Tengo's, rather than having a choppy rhythm of one then the other.

for instance, when Leader is killed, I would have had a great time reading the same events occurring simultaneously between the two characters, but with 450 pages between the two, or something, you know? But ultimately that would take away from the "parallel world" I'd imagine.

These are my favorite books/series that I can think of off the top of my head.

Fiction:
World War Z
Song of Ice and Fire
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter (for real...I was surprised by how well written and entertaining they were)
The Foundation (arguably the first sci-fi book of all time)
The Forever War
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
For Whom the Bell Tolls
All Quiet on the Western Front

Non-Fiction:
Team of Rivals (amazing book on Abraham Lincoln...basis for the movie based on him by Speilber)
I suck at Girls (hilarious book written by the guy who did "Sh*t my dad says"
Freakonomics
Scorecasting (the sports equivalent to Freakonomics)
Boomerang (Easy to read and solid book written about the global financial collapse in 08)

I am currently reading the first book in "The Dark Tower" series by Steven King. I am kind of having trouble with it. Does not seem to keep me too interested. I will probably finish this book, rent the second one from the library and if it does not get better, stop there.
