Cavashawn - Cavashawn EP
Record Label: None
Release Date: January 9, 2008
Who?
Cavashawn, a Chicago, IL, pop rock quartet who have deemed themselves to be "music you can live to."
How is it?
Too short. Cavashawn's 4-song EP, released in 2007, is a sensational sampling that shows pop sensibility and smart songwriting. Groundbreaking and original it may not be, but this is fun and clever. Any one of these songs could be a huge smash on the radio, but that doesn't mean this is watered down and trite. The band's melodies are infectiously catchy, and are made appealing when sung by a vocalist whose voice is actually distinguishable amidst the flurry of auto-tuned Patrick Stump impersonators. Scott Salmon runs an interesting vocal gamut, channeling Chris Conley at points (see the soaring chorus of "Just Because") and Justin Timberlake at others ("Out Of My Mind"). There are not electronics in excess; this is an EP made by four guys who want to play pop music. The Beatles they may not be, but they bring to pop the innocence, fun, and talent that seems to be so lacking from the genre these days. This one's highly recommended.
