Monument - 3 Song 7”
Record Label: None
Released: January 1, 2009
Hailing from Washington, DC, the aptly named Monument are turning heads with their latest 7” release. It’s obvious that Monument are influenced heavily by Braid in both the musical and lyrical departments, excelling in the indie/alternative rock sound. The vocalist has that John Gourley circa Anatomy of a Ghost type feel, and as you probably can guess these influences combine for some excellent music.
“Busy Being Bees" kicks off the 7”, jamming hard but doing so with melody. The guitar riffs are extremely catchy and so are the lyrics, which combine singing and some gang type shouts/sing-a-longs. “It’s Clear, Tension” follows up with more melodic riffs and catchy lyrics, and also features some bell-like percussion to add even more melody to the mix. The final track, “Memory and Location”, finishes off the 7” strongly, with some Braid-esque “Yeahs!” and around 2:15, the music cuts out so the entire band can yell “Get Rad!”
After listening to this 7”, I simply couldn’t get the songs out of my head. The guitar riffs and lyrics are extremely catchy, and it’s clear that Monument truly enjoy doing what they do. That’s what’s I love about the indie scene – No major label politics, just bands making music for the love of making music.
